10 years ago, the world was shocked by the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh, which killed over 1,100 people and injured more than 2,500. This tragic event highlighted the dangerous working conditions in the fashion industry. It also led to global awareness of the need for major reform in this industry. Today, we offer you an update on the latest articles we have written about Rana Plaza. Here, we will highlight the measures that have been taken since the tragedy.
Fairer and More Equitable Working Conditions
Following the event, the fashion industry took several measures to improve worker safety and ensure fairer and more equitable working conditions for everyone. Many fashion brands have taken steps within their supply chains. Several of them have signed the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. This is a legally binding commitment to improve building safety conditions in the country's textile industry. Since its implementation, the accord has conducted safety inspections in over 1,800 factories and helped close more than 100 factories deemed unsafe.
Companies have also worked to improve working conditions for employees in the textile industry. For example, some brands have adopted higher minimum wage standards for workers in their supply chains. Others have implemented programs to improve workers' education and health.
Stricter Standards
Civil society organizations and workers' rights groups have worked tirelessly to implement stricter standards in the fashion industry. For example, the Ethical Fashion Initiative is a group that works to promote sustainable and ethical practices in this industry. This initiative supports companies that work with local worker communities to promote fair and equitable labor practices.
You and we also have a role to play in transforming the fashion industry as consumers. Indeed, we can all choose to support brands that work to ensure fair working conditions and sustainable production. For our part, we make it a point of honor to offer you fair trade products at a price that guarantees our employees fair remuneration for their work. Non-discrimination and respect for workers' rights are among our main commitments.
Since the tragedy, several companies have taken measures to improve the working conditions of their employees. Unfortunately, the fight that began is far from over. This is particularly evident with the rise of Shein and many other brands.
