I discovered We like the world through a friend's status update that said "become a fan and thanks to you $1 will be donated to an organization building a school in Burkina Faso." At that point, I thought, I have to be a fan, because it costs me nothing and it's a good deed.
But it doesn't stop there; in fact, these globe-trotters (a dad, a mom, and their 8-year-old daughter) are traveling the world from June 2011 to June 2012, but thanks to the amazing network that is Facebook, they get hosted by their fans, virtual friends. And one night with a host family means $50 for the school in Burkina. That's how to cleverly use your network! And the best part is, it works; we welcome strangers but we know that ultimately we're meeting generous people, and then we become part of the generosity loop.
And the school project has really started, and I quote: "thanks to the first 6400 fans on Facebook (6400 x $1 = $6400 or €4741) and 60 nights hosted up to and including September 20 (60 x $50 = $3000 or €2222), we, the Colas Family, have donated €6963, thanks to you"
So I invite you to join the Facebook page and you can also make a donation.
And honestly, I find that in these gloomy times, seeing so much generosity, I don't know about you, but I also want to believe that anything is possible that ultimately there aren't just selfish people, because taking a sabbatical year and donating to this project is truly beautiful!
