Here's a post that's been on my mind for about ten days; lack of time, the fear of rocking the boat, had put me off a bit.
The reason for the post is the closure of two major ethical brands (Idéo and Azimuts). Because yes, today I'm upset. I'm upset that after ten years in ethical fashion, you ultimately can't make a living. Of course, I wonder why these two major brands, despite being different, closed. The crisis?
Obviously, we won't lie, we see and feel the crisis. Stores are closing, or they are cautious and hesitant to stock our range of organic lingerie. Yet, exactly 8 years ago, we took the crazy gamble of launching into organic underwear, to show that another way of producing was possible. That people could be employed without exploitation.
However, when brands close their doors, we question whether the market is ultimately too compartmentalized and too small. Few new brands are entering the market in France (not to say none in recent years). Are consumers ultimately interested in organic products, but only in food and cosmetics (which have dream sales figures) and are neglecting clothing?
Rest assured, at Peau-Ethique we are still doing okay. What might be saving us is the fact that we are a small family business. But even if times are tough, and seeing an ethical brand disappear affects me greatly, I believe we must continue to educate about ethical fashion and organic products in general, so that change can happen through more responsible consumption.
PS: I'm going to start blogging again :)
