Yesterday (April 7, 2016) I watched Envoyé Spécial on endocrine disruptors. And like many, I found the report extremely anxiety-inducing. (I think it's available on demand if you missed it)
Indeed, apart from making us feel guilty because almost our entire environment is full of endocrine disruptors, almost no solutions are offered. And since I try to be a bit positive (lol I know), I think that making consumers feel guilty or scaring them won't provide a solution.
So, first of all, what is an endocrine disruptor? It's "a chemical substance of natural and artificial origin. It can interfere with the endocrine system and induce harmful effects on our body as well as on that of our descendants".
Well, knowing that, we're already less inclined to have children. And we're a bit scared because they're everywhere (BUT EVERYWHERE).
In vegetables (which are not organic because of pesticides), in our hygiene products, in plastic bottles, in food packaging. In short, it's not fun at all.
But there are solutions. Easy things to implement so that we stop poisoning ourselves (yes, I use scary words).
Knowing that most EDs (not Peau-Ethique, but Endocrine Disruptors) are found in hygiene products, we can change. And we can calmly switch to organic. (Well, you still have to read the labels because sometimes there are VERY unpleasant surprises).
We know that alternatives exist, so let's change gradually. For example, makeup (because hehe I'm a girl) (just kidding). In 2016, there are multiple brands that offer organic makeup (face powder for minerals, lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara... the list is endless). And just because you use organic makeup doesn't mean you won't be as "fresh" as someone else who has a total paraben look (oh my, that's a jab). Same for shower gel (we'll be clean and smell good). Maybe slow cosmetics can also be a solution...
In short, instead of making women/mothers/non-mothers feel guilty about ingesting parabens being bad for their health, let's show them that many alternatives exist.
I also invite you to visit the Générations Cobayes website, which informs about EDs but also provides solutions.
Anyway (be careful, I'm about to state a truth), only we can be the change we want (Gandhi, more or less).
(Next time I'll make a big list of endocrine disruptors in products, but that will be a real in-depth article, not a post following a TV show)
