We all have in mind that bamboo = ecological. This idea is completely false and yet it is deeply ingrained. Bamboo is far from ecological. While the fiber is ecological, its transformation is rather (very) polluting. But no one talks about it. Why? Because it's much better to sell a "natural" product than a "natural-but-polluting" one.
First, you should know that bamboo's big ecological plus is that it fixes CO2 much better and releases 30% more oxygen, and this plant grows on its own, no need for fertilizers or GMOs...
So why was there such a craze for bamboo? This is a real question, even if I have the impression that it has gone out of fashion a bit, but at one point everyone swore by it.
And we're not going to lie, but it's true, when you touch bamboo products, they're soft (more than cotton) but it's not bamboo, it's VISCOSE, and that's the whole difference!
And viscose is not natural at all. While it is initially made with bamboo, caustic soda and quaternary ammonium (to inhibit or slow down bacterial proliferation) are added to it.
I could stop there and think that I hope I have convinced you not to buy bamboo products, but as an unbearable ad would say, it's not over. No, the transformation is worse. Manufacturing is very water-intensive, and the wastewater is not often/sometimes treated, leading to pollution of groundwater, rivers...
Well, in short, you understand that bamboo only has the name "eco-friendly," everything else is harmful to you and the planet, and even if the socks are sooo soft, it's better to choose organic cotton socks (yes, I put a link)(yes, you might not know that we sell socks).
