Should we save a newspaper? (Terra Eco case)

REAL QUESTION

This is about Terra Eco. A magazine I subscribed to for 2 years and I don't know why I stopped my subscription. Terra Eco today and I remember Shi-Zen yesterday (the real ones know). And BioMood too. So the question I'm asking is how does a magazine make it when it's independent?

terraeco

We know most magazines rely on advertising to survive, but when you're in a sector like ours (i.e. ecology), companies don't necessarily have an advertising budget, and most importantly, readers don't look at ads (because there are so few of them) and are more interested in the magazine's content than in the ad pages.

I'm talking about my own case. I no longer read Elle (yes, I have high standards), precisely because of all this advertising aggression. But how do you manage then? Real question.

If no one wants to advertise in an independent magazine, how does that magazine survive? How does it pay its employees?

I remember Shi-Zen, a small magazine I subscribed to right away. But it didn't last. Yet it was cool to see ethical fashion (IT WAS ALWAYS MISSING PEAU-ETHIQUE BUT OH WELL), topics covered in an offbeat way, an approach to ecology that was pretty well done. But people aren't interested. Same for BioMood, a rather offbeat women's magazine that dealt with real topics (yes, with Peau-Ethique in it of course)

I feel like it's the same for Terra Eco. The magazine manages to cover extremely interesting topics, but we (yes, I) have the impression that the readers are only committed people. Like, oh no, I read Voici, you understand, I can't subscribe to this kind of magazine. WHY?

Anyway, all this to say that it's extremely sad for a magazine that's over 10 years old to launch a crowdfunding campaign. Personally, I support a lot of crowdfunding, but only those with real added value (not those to go on vacation for a year because I'm poor and I'll say I'm also doing a bit of ecology during my trip) (yes, I deeply hate those kinds of people). So. I re-subscribed for a year. It's really not much. But it would genuinely bother me if an independent magazine disappeared in favor of sanitized press. Anyway, they still need €500,000. I don't know if my small €55 will actually change anything.

But another question, what is the future of the press? When you see that Nice Matin also did a crowdfunding campaign, that Libé isn't doing so great. What will be left for us? Voici with pictures of Jenifer on the cover? Yes, well, no.

So if you also want to support Terra Eco
