India is the leading producer/processor of leather. But this joy of offshoring comes at a price: pollution, diseases… The Kanpur region is a prime example.
The Toxic Price of Leather from Sean Gallagher on Vimeo.9 minutes that show you the damage caused by the leather industry. To humans, but especially to the Ganges.
So, with 50 million liters of discharge per day from all tanneries, it's no surprise that it pollutes the Ganges. But it's not eco-friendly dye, no, not at all, just heavy metals that kill everything in the river and, more importantly, all agriculture nearby because it pollutes the soil.
In terms of public health, there are also serious problems. Many children are born with mental deficiencies. Why? Simply because they live next to a tannery. Others lose their sight due to the chemicals used in dyeing. The worst is skin depigmentation.
In these 9 minutes, we see a 16-year-old child working in a tannery. He is already starting to go blind. Is this the price we want to pay for our bags and shoes? I don't think so.
The alternative? Vegetable tanning. No nasty chemicals in the leather. Rivers are not polluted. Workers are not at risk. But most importantly, it's good for your feet.
