This morning I stumbled upon a video showing a (very thin) supermodel who said she was unemployed because she was too fat.
Let's calm down right away, but a girl whose two thighs combined equal one of mine is a fat girl. What am I then?
Is this the image society portrays or seeks to portray? Should we always display ultra-thin women with a BMI that makes us pale?
Do we get a better view of a product if it's worn by a very thin person, would that make me want to buy it?
To be honest, it makes me self-conscious. I'm here doing my diet and drinking my detox tea because I've gained weight. And wait, you'll laugh, I tell myself I need to lose a lot of weight to fit in with this consumer society.
The worst part is that we sell cotton lingerie and sometimes we receive messages saying our models are too fat. It's funny that you can be fat wearing a size 36/38, but whatever. But if you see these young girls' ribs, will that make us sell more panties?
I doubt it because body shapes have really changed. We used to sell a lot more 36/38 than today. Now it's more like 40/42.
I'll tell you a secret, when I look at a product and it's being worn, I never say to myself "oh yeah she's thin, that's why the product looks better." No, I rather say "oh it falls like that, oh yes why not."
It's crazy this societal pressure we have to stay thin.
