The fair price of a garment

Share

I think I've already used this title and asked myself "hey Ludivine, what's the fair price for a piece of clothing?" because yes, I do like talking to myself.

Joking aside, what price, for example, are we willing to pay for a cotton t-shirt (let's go crazy, with a screen print)? I admit I could have talked about socks, but oh well. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.

We all buy t-shirts, so this is a question we can all ask ourselves. For example, in my case (sorry, I'll be the only panel in this study), I know I can't buy a t-shirt for less than €5, for several reasons.

Firstly, I tell myself that at €5, the poor person who made it probably wasn't well paid, and if the brand sells it for €5, they must be making a huge profit, so the product must be of poor quality, perhaps GMO cotton (my biggest fear), plus what about the dyes... so I wouldn't spend €5 on a t-shirt any more than I would spend €5 on a face cream.

So, €10/15? But is that fair? At that price, do the cotton farmers live decently, are the dyes clean, is the manufacturing at least decent, if not ethical?

€20/25 for a cotton t-shirt that's neither organic nor ethical?

Haha, that's tough, honestly.

I also have a lot of trouble with this concept of "sales," because it means that the rest of the year, prices aren't fair? That for two months we can enjoy good deals? I can't really understand it. On our side, we've never had sales, because truly the concept of a fair price, and especially since we don't have a seasonal product (I don't know if that's very French, but you get the idea). So maybe we're wrong and we'll probably lose money, but I can't see myself having sales on a product and putting it back to the "real" price a month later just to do what other brands do.

Perhaps also, if the fair price were applied everywhere, we would consume better and wouldn't wait for sales. Well, it's just a thought :)

(There are still end-of-series promotions on the site! because we need space as we'll be bringing in the new collection soon).
